Seascapes - Rock pools, coastal features and natural patterns - Seacliff Beach, North Berwick, - 10am - 2 hours
Seacliff Beach is probably the best beach within a 30 mile radius of Edinburgh for landscape photography, with lots of potential to identify and shoot coastal features and practice using filters.

If you own filters (Neutral Density or graduated, Little Stopper etc) please bring them and we will cover using these filters for creative effects.

This session is suitable for intermediate level photographers - but if you are a beginner and do not own any filters, please also attend for an introduction to shooting coastal features such as rock pools and limestone rock patterns.

This should be a gentle session looking at exploring seascapes.

We run two hour photography sessions based on a photography theme/technique/style and they take place in various locations across the region.
New to photography? We also run a popular 3 hour Beginners Guide to Photography Class once a month.
And once in a while we will run special niche 3 hour classes, for example, Astrophotography - so do subscribe to our newsletter to know when the next on is!

Who can attend? Open to all skill levels, from beginners to keen amateurs. The photography instructor is there to help you with camera settings and provide any advice you need.

What to bring? We recommend bringing a camera that has full manual mode or semi-manual modes (Aperture or Shutter Priority). Compact cameras and smartphones also welcome!

The meeting point and full details for the day are sent in the booking confirmation email to the email address you provide at time of booking.

Your experience doesnít stop once the class ends - you can also share your photos with your peers in the Edinburgh Photography Facebook Group

Photo Therapy - Broughton Street, Edinburgh - 10am - 2 hours
'Photo-therapy' - A gentle session to explore the use of photography as a form of art therapy, mindfulness practice or as a creative tool to process emotions.' This session is held with the appreciation that the past year has been an incredibly stressful and challenging time for all of us. The session aims to explore photography as a therapeutic tool, or simply to take some time for yourself and notice what inspiration comes to you, with no intent in mind. The small group will spend the start of the session in the beautiful Queen Street Gardens, decide on a theme together, and then go exploring to a chosen location together to photograph what catches your attention or what you are drawn to. The group will then come together at the end for a discussion or story about their images. There is no judgement or pressure to speak, if anyone does not want to. Even if the session is just for taking some time for yourself to photograph while surrounded by supportive people, that is absolutely encouraged. I have been trained as an Equine Therapist (using horses to help humans) with further training in trauma-counselling. Although it is important to note that this is not a counselling session, just a gentle introduction to photography as a form of art therapy. Many photo-therapy students fill their walls with images they have taken that symbolise happiness and love and freedom. Or they use photography as a release or a way of visualising emotions. I can help with any photographic instruction, with different camera techniques and creative practices, and anyone is welcome, from camera-phone users to DSLR photographers. I hope this session will be a joyful and uplifting one for photographers in and around Edinburgh who want to explore their creativity.

Woodland Scenes and Spring Flowers - Dalkeith Country Park - 10am - 2 hours

Beginners Guide to Photography - Getting started - Stockbridge, Edinburgh - 10am - 3 hours
A complete beginners session for students with DSLR or Mirrorless cameras and who want to learn how to use their camera with the aim of shooting using manual mode or just taking better pictures.

The class will cover basics such as the exposure triangle of shutter-speed, aperture and ISO.

We will also cover choosing focal lengths, metering, the basics of composition and understanding both how the camera works and how to use natural light to achieve the photographs you are after.

This is a friendly, supportive class and suitable for absolute beginners. Please do not be afraid if you are unsure how to turn your camera on or use the settings yet!

We will cover the basics while sat outside (hopefully in the sunshine) alongside the Water of Leith. Hopefully we can then practice some still-life photography in the Botanic Gardens, before moving over to Inverleith Park to practise using shutter speeds by photographing running dogs or a sports event.

Composition and Storytelling in Photography - University / Meadows area, Edinburgh - 10am - 2 hours
Composition - what the photographer chooses to include in the photograph, positioning of these elements in the frame and the elements they leave out - is a vital part of taking photographs that challenge and make a connection with the viewer.

We will cover many of the traditional compositional 'rules' that photographers follow, but also when to break these rules for creative effect.

Additionally, we will cover storytelling in photography, which is increasingly recognised as key to shooting interesting images that capture the attention of a viewer.

Storytelling photography is taking images that infuse a moment with tension, inspiration, and emotions.

We will hopefully be able to move on from the Meadows and George Square Gardens to the beautiful Old College Quad (opening dependent on relaxing lockdown rules.)

Glasgow's Street Murals - A Photography Walk - George Square, Glasgow - 10am - 3 hours
Glasgow's innovative and often beautiful Street Murals are becoming internationally famous as examples of street art that rejuvenate urban areas. Murals like the Glasgow Panda, St Enoch and Child and Saint Mungo often take up the side of entire houses or loom over abandoned buildings or car parks.
This session will be a photo walk to many of the murals, trying to get interesting perspectives and images, a bit of history about the murals and possibly some architecture photography around Glasgow's historic and stylish merchant city. If the session runs on a bit, it would be lovely if attendees wanted to share a coffee or cake after the walk and possibly connect with other photographers. This will hopefully be a gentle but fascinating session. Please bring walking shoes and be prepared for some walking between murals.

Great, apart from the weather. Virginia had researched the area beforehand so we didnít have to search for the birds. I was also very grateful for use of her lens for the session. I look forwards to the next session.

This is the first event of this type I have attended and was really nervous. The host Lara really put me at ease and was great throughout the morning. It was great that there was only 3 of us, Lara was able to split her time most generously between us all. A great price, not prohibitive at all.
