Wildlife Photography - Migrating Birds - Aberlady Bay, near Gullane - 10am - 2 hours
Aberlady Bay was the UK's first local nature reserve and is renowned for its abundant birdlife.
Every Autumn, up to 30,000 geese stop here during their annual migration, making for a stunning spectacle when they reach for the skies in huge flocks.
The migrating birds are mostly Pink-Footed geese, but also Barnacle, Brent, Greylag and Snow Geese.
We will walk into the reserve and try to photograph the geese as they fly into the sky in huge numbers, before resettling.

NOTE - you must wear knee-length welly boots or waterproof boots as the area is a wetland and feet will get wet.

Also, depending on where the geese are and tide times, there will be a 20-30 min walk across the nature reserve to find them, so please arrive by 9.30am and expect to finish maybe 30 mins late too.

And once in a while we will run special niche 3 hour classes, for example, Astrophotography - so do subscribe to our newsletter to know when the next on is!

Who can attend? Open to all skill levels, from beginners to keen amateurs. The photography instructor is there to help you with camera settings and provide any advice you need.

Autumn Colours - Photography Meet-up at Roslin Glen - Roslin Glen Country Park, out of Edinburgh in the village of Roslin - 10am - 2 hours
Roslin Glen contains atmospheric and legend-heavy woodlands - with ancient yews and castle remains, making them a great place for some autumnal photography.

The glen is said to be haunted by a phantom hound whose eerie barking is heard in the woods around the castle on stormy nights.

We will pass along the River North Esk and look at photographing some of these enchanting woodland scenes. Photographic instruction is provided on woodland photography and some landscape features. Suitable for all levels.

Beginners Guide to Photography Class - Getting started - Stockbridge, Edinburgh - 10am - 3 hours
The complete photography 101 for beginners - where I hope you will be shooting on manual mode by the end of the session.
I love teaching beginners and have been running this session for two years now.
We cover exposure basics - aperture, shutter speed and ISO; reading your light meter and histogram, and some compositional 'rules' and when to break them.
We spend time running through settings by the Water of Leith, before heading to the Botanic Gardens for aperture practice. We then head over to Inverleith Park for some dog photography (with two dog models) to practice shutter speed.

I really enjoyed this session and caught some great shots of the Forth Rail Bridge and light trails. This was a pretty large group but Virginia managed it really well and everyone got her attention. Can't wait until the next one

Virginia, the instructor, was nice and attentive to all of us, even when we were a large group of 10 people. She provided us with technical guidance and took us to the best spots to take good shots of the Forth bridges and light trails in South Queensferry. It was a fun event, and I highly recommend this type of event for people trying out different types of photography.

I really enjoyed it although it was beyond Beginners in my opinion. That said, Virginia was excellent. Patient and very supportive and I learnt lots from her and the others. I didn't think my shots were very good until I downloaded them and edited a little. I may not have been skilled enough to follow the remit exactly, but pretty pleased with the results actually

First time I’ve ever went on a course. Virginia was excellent, very friendly and happy to answer any questions. As someone who shoots on Auto 99.9% of the time, I came away with the confidence to switch to manual. Thank you

Great, apart from the weather. Virginia had researched the area beforehand so we didn’t have to search for the birds. I was also very grateful for use of her lens for the session. I look forwards to the next session.
